Stan Ridgway
Anatomy (New West)
If Los Angeles didn't exist, Stanard Ridgway would have
invented it. His ruminative explorations of life positively drip L.A.
and all the seedy underside of that dream town. If "Pulp
Fiction" was a cinematic ode to L.A. that never exhisted, the
Ridgway's songs are the soundtrack to the real L.A. and
I guess it is no accident that each song on Anatomy sounds like a
song plucked from some serious 20th century indie film.
Ridgway lists three contact addresses in the booklet with the CD,
one of which is for the people that handle his soundtrack
offers. There;s even a track "Murrays Steakhouse Story", which
basically is an interlude piece of music to be played
over a scene in which the main character plans "the big caper" that will
wrap up all those stray plot lines (in a linear way,
of course). "Sweet Pig Alley" has that same character creeping around the
back of the warehouse, looking for clues. Ridgway has
said in interviews that he likes to sprinkle his albums with these
instrumentals because he gets tired of all that singing.
And maybe it is Ridgway's voice that holds him back.
Sometimes it serves him well ("Mission Bell"), but other times it is
almost like he is auditioning songs for someone like
Bob Seger (see "Susie Before Sunrise") and he strains to handle the
tune. Overall, however, he uses his voice as the strongest
instrument in his arsenal, laying it on a song like a woodworker
layers varnish to bring out the richness of his work.
I heard "Mexican Radio" on the, um, radio the other day
and was surprised how well it has held up. I guess Ridgway is
cursed by the pop gem. Nothing here is as striking as
that once-in-a-lifetime song, but there are certain tracks that are as
good as "Don't Box Me In" (minus Stewart Copeland's dynamic
percussion). And his cover version of "Sixteen Tons" is a
neat encapsulation of what his entire career has been
about.
Fans of good song writing will want to check this one
out.

"ANATOMY REVIEW" STAN RIDGWAY
UNDER THE SECTION.............IN THE UK MAGAZINE
THE MOJO FILTER
This month's very best music - and the people who make
it.
Ridgway Stan.....Page 111.
Stan Ridgway.
Anatomy (New West).
Former Wall Of Voodoo founder digs deep into the American
psyche.
Ridgway has come up with an album's worth of songs full
of roads, weather, violent death and ominous portents of
something even more awful just around the bend.
If From Dawn 'Til Dusk didn't already have such a great
sound track, this would do nicely.
Strap yourself in...it's going to be a bumpy ride...
There's something wonderfully spartan about some of the
arrangements, with Susie Before Sunrise sounding like a masterpiece he
coundn't be bothered finishing, but most of the time
his slightly dissonant soundscapes serve not just as perfect backdrops
for his American gothic tales but as conveniently interesting
distractions from the fact he has a wonderful and evocative vocal
range. Trivia freaks might be amused to know that the
CD booklet includes thanks to Santa Monica pier, which was last
given credit on an album by The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band
on Dream in 1975. And also Luthar and the Hand People from San Fran.
Unless anyone knows different. Hey!..what do I know?....

Under the review there is a very cool colour picture
(quite big) of Stan with the caption :
